Switch is faster.
The primary difference between Hub and Switch in that a hub in the whole (all ports)is 1 collision domain, switch is 1 collision domain on one port.

There is still the possibility of collisions on the individual ports, using half-duplex.

The primary difference between Hubs and Switches, are that switches are faster due to the way they utilize the bandwidth. Switches use MAC table, as would a router would use a routing table. A switch keeps track of which MAC address (which PC) is on which port, thereby not forwarding the traffic onto the other ports, but rather only forwarding the frames to the specific port. Hubs forwards all frames to all ports, and thus wastes bandwidth and results in more collisions.

I'm not expecting points - just backing up (supporting) the reply above me. That person is 100% correct. I think you should give him/her points. Its a good explanation.

The problem with switches (when you are a small company) is convincing management to spend the extra cash on them versus hubs, a high quality switch is significantly more costly than even a decent active hub. There's a "real world" difference between them.

Atlas, I love switches.

later.

I also applaud the decision to move toward switches rather than hubs. Furthermore, if you can swing it, get some that can be managed (snmp and remote access will help as your organization grows). Allied Telesyn and HP make some really nice models that aren't as pricey as the 3com or other name brand switches.
