I have seen something similar to this.
1. First try to rename.
2. If that fails, run a thorough virus scan.
3. If that still fails, do a surface scan of your hard drive. There may be some bad sectors.
4. Lastly, you may have to fdisk and re-install.

This may not be the help you were looking for, but it is what I have experienced.

Lots of luck

You can't delete them because they are named with non standard "extended" asci characters.

First, the virus scan is a definite "must do". Something has gone rogue to create all
these, and it probably isn't a bad program install.....

Second, get to your dos prompt, and change to
the C:\windows\command directory.

type in attrib -r -s -h c:\*.* at the dos prompt. This will remove any "read only", system, and hidden file attributes from those directories.

Then delete them throughwindows explorer or "my computer".

If they still won't delete, It's tedious, but rename them one by one using explorer, to something like D1, D2, D3.... then delete.

I had this problem with an old hard drive. Nothing worked, so I tried a low-level format. It seemed to work, but the drive had an enormous number of new bad sectors. I didn't take a chance on the drive--I had several spare drives that I could useas a replacement.
