hxdefdrv.sys

By galehickey2 ·
Virus scan showed a hxdefdrv.sys file. Deleted it but the bogus file appeared back in the windows folder a short while after being on the net. Several groups suggested downloading HIJACK THIS. Was unable to do this in addition to downloading SPYBOT S&D-message "merging of the file segments failed-unable to create output file, etc." Upon rebooting both downloads appeared briefly on my desktop then dissapeared. This file showed up about the same time as wuxat.exe appeared. Started having trouble signing on. Deleted hxdefdrv.sys in safemode but still reappears. Where is this thing coming from? Have used online scans also to delete it but to no avail.

From what little I am finding, it looks like hxdefdrv.sys is a new virus.

Trend Micro's tools are supposed to be able to find and quarantine the files infected by the virus.

They say that it normally piggybacks on some spy-ware programs.

wuxat may be the spy-ware the virus is riding on.
This also looks to be new.

Once you get your system cleaned up. If you don't already use one, install a software firewall such as Zone Alarm.

Here's a thread on this same problem at the spyware forums:

People there are talking about how to manually cut this one out.
