I am having problems with a CD drive and also DVD drive on the same PC

I have a friend who has a Packard Bell PC,loaded with XP Home edition, which had been having problems connecting to the Net. Someone came for a look and uninstalled the Virus checker (McAfee)and reloaded another one (Avast), to “cure” the problem. Since then neither the CD or DVD drives have worked. Explorer cannot find them. They can be located in the device manager, but with an exclaimation mark against them. There are also 3 other instances of the same drive highlighted (again with an exclaimation mark)above the CD / DVD drives. These are a SCSI drive, but there are no SCSI drives installed in the PC. Tried to take out all the drives in the device manager (uninstall) and rebooted PC. Same thing came up. Checked out the CMOS, all set to “auto”.I have checked all the plugs, jumper settings, connections, everything okay. Removed both CD and DVD drives, inserted one of own drives, which I know to be correct, this was found in device manager, again with exclaimation mark. Could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks. Mark.
