Getting the keys to my office!

by andy In reply to I am not a people person

Today at 3.30pm GMT I will be getting the keys to my very own office -
its 325 square feet of ground floor corner office with a lot of windows
and a "nice" view.<br />
<br />
I leave full-time employment on the 1st of September - from then on I will be on my own.<br />
<br />
I can't wait - I am currently working from an industrial unit, it has
no windows, air conditioning and is too hot in the summer and too clod
in the winter. The company I curently work for tends to attract the
worst type of customer, most of them have the appearence of being
homeless and a lot of them smell. They come in here being stupid and
stinking the place up, below is an example of the mentallity (read
stupidity) of the standard of customer I have to deal with on a regualr
basis;<br />
<br />
<em>Customer walks up to our trade counter<br />
<br />
</em>Me: Hello<br />
<br />
Customer: "Grunt"<br />
<br />
Me: How can I help you?<br />
<br />
Customer: I want a router. I'm setting up a home network.<br />
<br />
Me: OK - how many PC's are you networking?<br />
<br />
Customer: 256<br />
<br />
Me: 256? You have 256 PC's at home?<br />
<br />
Customer: No - I have 2 but I want to be able to network up to 256.<br />
<br />
Me: OK - (thinking to self "I will regret this") Do you know anything about IP Addressing?<br />
<br />
Customer: Yeah - I know all about networks me, I'm going to use an IP of 192.168.1.0 subnet  255.255.255.0<br />
<br />
Me: OK - That would leave you upto 254 host IP addresses.<br />
<br />
Customer: No - its 256.<br />
<br />
Me: No - you are wrong (he becomes agitated)<br />
<br />
Customer: You don't know what you are talking about - its 256 I know about networks<br />
<br />
Me: No - its 254. But you could use a subnet of 255.255.0.0 then you'd have 1022 available addresses.<br />
<br />
Customer: You cant have a subnet of 255.255.0.0 it has to be 255.255.255.0 or it won't work<br />
<br />
Me: You don't know anything about IP addressing do you?<br />
<br />
Customer: I know more about it than you, you don't know what you are talking about.<br />
<br />
Me: Ok - Fine, which router do you want?<br />
<br />
Customer: One that can network 256 computers.<br />
<br />
Me: Any of those over there will do.<br />
<br />
Customer: Ok - I will probably come back for one, I'm just looking about at the moment.<br />
<br />
I have had enough of idiots like this wasting me time. I don't want to
be in the same room as someone like this, they are using up oxygen in
that room.<br />
<br />
From the 1st of September I will be pre-screening potential customers
with a very basic aptiude/ability test. I will send the idiots to PC
World - they will be in good company.<em><br />

Got the keys to my office!

by andy In reply to I am not a people person

I now have the keys to my office.<br />
<br />
Going to be busy getting ready for the 1st of September, still have to
work for my employer untill 31st of August. I think I'll take some
"sick leave".<br />
<br />
Did not have to deal with any customers yesterday which was nice.<br />
<br />
Expecting a couple of nerds today, why do people assume I know
everything about their particular motherboard? Why do they assume I
would like to engage in lengthy in depth discussions about their
motherboard?<br />
<br />
Anyway - did anyone notice the delibrate mistake in my last post? <em>No because nobody read it.</em><br />
<br />
I think my next post will have a title like "10 Humours linux commands", that will probably get some attention.<br />
<br />
Bye for now.<br />
