What do you mean by “last one that could be updated”? I’ve seen older and newer get OS updates and depending on the model, more RAM or the storage replaced.

If you want best performance in same range than you can go with MacBook Pro it is better than MacBook Air 2017. I know that looks is good of MacBook Air. But I suggest you to go with MacBook Pro

The answer to this question depends on your own mindset and interest. If you are using windows laptop and planning to switch to mac then I would definitely suggest you go for it without any second thought.
If you are ready to go with MacBook Air 2017 then don’t listen to people who say Apple products are overpriced, it has just 128 SSD so you can’t store anything, its Intel 5th generation processor, the display resolution and pixel are not up to the mark all are just stories.
I can promise you that once you get your first MacBook you will love each and every details bit by bit from Design, Battery Life, Multitouch Trackpad, Portable, and the secured macOS Mojave.
The MacBook has three variants Mac for Education, Mac for Higher Education, and Mac for Business so choose the one which fit for your career and its worth for every single penny which you invest.

I think it depends on which purpose do you have for the macbook.
For example, if you just want to access for the internet and use browser etc only, MacBook Air is fine, but on the other hand, if you want to program or use photoshop (CPU, memory consuming), MacBook Pro is the better choice. -

Also depends on what you’re using this for as other’s have stated. The new M1 is way faster and the MacBook Pro model you could also search for an older year’s version (still new in box or refurbished, etc).
