I Can only see my network with NETBUEI

By roger.work ·
I have a Windows 98 peer to peer network. I recently puchased a unit which uses a NT to control its operation. Until I put NETBUEI on all machines the NT workstation will not recognize my network. I want to run a TCP/IP network only. What can cause this and how can I fix it?

Have you assigned IP numbers on your clients? If you have not they will probabley be looking for a DHCP (Dymanic Host Control Protocol) server. You will need to have the DHCP Server service running on your network somewhere. Of course the best place for this is usually on your server which must have a defined IP number. If your client machines are going to be accessing the internet (and you have a registered IP address pool) the DHCP Server must also provide the gateway address.

1. install updated networkcarddrivers on all systems.
2. The fact that you can see your network through browsing is a convenience for work, but if you don't see them doesn't mean your network is not functioning if you can not see them. If you can ping the pc's ipadresses or find them through "find computer" you are fine.
The drivers are the culprit and maybe even the updated drivers you can not "see" the pc's. (part of real life networking , instead what the theory says) :)
Also it takes time for a pc to announce itself in the browselist , somewhere between 12 and 48 minutes. for troubleshooting always use the ping or find.

Go to all your clients and install Microsoft TCP/IP and remove netBEUI.(in that order) use a simple TCP addressing scheme like 192.168.0.1 2 3 4 5 6
use 255.255.255.0 as your subnet mask.
Make sure that if you double click the file and printer sharing component in network neighborhood that it is set to Browse master auto. restart all the machines.
Now once restarted use user names and passwords and open dos prompt.
First go C:\ping loopback
you should get a reply! then go
C:\ping 192.168.0.6 and there should be a reply

enjoy !

Its not broken. You can remove netbuei and setup TCP/IP and it will work fine. What you can't do is see the 98 machine, because they have to be sharing file or print services. You can however do a search and find them.

Just a quick one (he says)...

NetBEUI is a broadcast protocol, if you want to browse the network through network neighbourhood then you either need some kind of Nameserver (like WINS) or a name broadcast protocol.

WINS (Windows Internet NamingService) is a server side database that holds a list of computer names and associated IP addresses. This is possibly the neatest solution but requires a server operating system. The system itself is very easy to set-up.

IP will work fine on its own, with the name resolution restrictions. IE you can't ping computera because your computer wouldn't know where to get the IP from, however you could ping 192.168.65.1 if your IP was 192.168.65.2 and in the same subnet.

Happy networking!
