Start by turning off CAPS LOCK.

After that info there is pretty much about 1 million options left.
Check your IP, check Proxy, etc etc etc

We can only assume so much based upon our experience. Are you familiar with the Open Systems Interconenction model? OSI? There are 7 layers. Can you provide more detailed information about your setup.

Is this a server or a workstation?
Are there any switches/routers in use, I am assuming there is a modem as you mention "Internet:".
When did the problem start occurring, did you have connectivity before...if so, what has changed?

How do you know the machine you're successfully pinging is the DNS server? Just because the PING succeeds (Internet Layer) does not mean that the DNS service (Applicaiton Layer) is running or even installed on the maching you're pinging.

What you need to try next is the NSLOOKUP command. At the command prompt just type NSLOOKUP and hit enter... post what you get back here.

Do you have a server and a router on your network?.. try running "ipconfig /all" in your command promt and see if your DNS is your Server and your router is your default gateway..

Note: Its very important that your DNS forwarders is properly configured

DNS forwarders

by Razor1185 In reply to I CAN PING DNS SERVER BUT ...

If the DNS server that you can ping is an internal server, check that is has DNS forwarders configured correctly. Add a common public DNS server, such as (google).

RE: Can't browse Internet.

by dcapote002 In reply to I CAN PING DNS SERVER BUT ...

One Thing I would try, is to boot into Safe Mode with Networking. Reboot your computer and quick hitting the F8 Key-that will take you into the advanced boot options menu. From there select SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, using the up and down arrow keys, your mouse won't work. IF you can get online with SMWN, then you probably have a virus/malware issue on your machine. Another thing to try, is going into the control panel and disabling the Windows and any other software firewall, and see if you can get online then. Hope this helps and Happy Thanksgiving!

A similar experience....

by PhilM In reply to I CAN PING DNS SERVER BUT ...

.... a year to two ago. Had a home use with a similar issue. Her PC was\is XP. Much gnashing of teeth and trawling event logs showed that it had tried to do its usual Second Tuesday updates and had got its knickers in a twist with SP3.
Manual download of SP3 and then a revisit to the house and installed SP3 manually. All sorted.

This may or may not help, but at least it has given me some typing practice on my wife's netbook :-)

Start by scanning the system

by wechorba In reply to I CAN PING DNS SERVER BUT ...

for malware and spyware. Also, if using Internet Explorer, check the Connections tabLAN Settings and see if a Proxy is checked. If so, uncheck it. Scan the system a second time if anything is found. I use Malwarebytes' and Spybot with a helping of Avira free. This works in all my cases. Don't forget Kaspersky's TSSkiller to scan for rootkits.

Check DHCP Settings

by dcapote002 In reply to I CAN PING DNS SERVER BUT ...

A couple of other things you can try are to go to the command prompt and typing ipconfig /all and checking if DHCP is set to Automatic, (Which is what you'll usually need on a home network, unless you have a DHCP Server of your own with a Static IP).

Also try running Combo Fix or CC Cleaner if you think you might have viruses/malware.
Hope this helps!
