I cannot login to linux. Can anyone help?

By kmabika ·
I am having a problem with loging into Redhat 6.2, even as 'root'. The main problem is that on the login prompt (login: ), if I type root and then press ENTER, it goes back to "login: ". It does not give me the "password: " prompt. So, it means thatI cannot login. Can anyone help me solve this problem, please?

Sounds like something is screwed up in your /etc/passwd file and possibly the /etc/shadow if your using shadowed passwords. Boot up in linux single. To do this just type linux single at the lilo prompt. (If your using grub I don't know what to do other than take a big bite of the "I'm screwed" sandwich.

You could use Tom's Root Book disk to boot from your floppy drive and gain access to your file system and rebuild your password files.

You can get Tom's Root Boot disk here: http://www.toms.net/rb/
