I can’t install SP2 over Windows XP on my Thinkpad

And IBM/Lenovo and Microsoft are simply passing me from one’s support people to the others.

I wiped this machine and re-installed to the factory default using the standard IBM rebuild utility, using the image on the bard disk. I then ran through all the updates, until SP2 came along.

The same happens whether I use the MS automatic update service, or download the full SP2 package and run it locally. The install starts, with plenty of har disk activity, but after 10-15 minutes the following message appears – “Some updates were not installed. The following updates were not installed: Windows XP Service Pack 2”

I’ve updated the BIOS and all other drivers. There is plenty of space on the hard disk.

The update history clearly shows the several failed installations for each of the times I’ve tried. The error code is consistently the same at 0x80070017, which I’ve been unable to find in the Microsoft support area.

Although the COA is the OEM one that came with the notebook, I have a full Windows XP COA, but not an installation DVD with SP2, which would of course overcome the problem.

Any ideas ?

Thanks
