I can’t log off a user

I’m running WinXP Pro SP2 on a variety of machines. On two of these, when a user has been logged on for a period of time (say, over two hours) and an other user is also logged on, if one of them tried to sign off, the computer saves the user settings, and then displays the background on the screen. The mouse pointer is still there, and moves. But it won’t get past that. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing, nor do any of the mouse buttons.

I appreciate any help!

Try using the Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. This may losen up the knot of profiles that can happen sometimes. It’s available throigh the MS-KB site, or you may be able to use the address below:

Save the UPHClean-Setup.msi to somewhere convenient. Run it and the service will start automatically. If you want to change the start-up type or disable it, use Services through Control Panel|Administrative Tools

What exactly does this utility do?

I’m having a problem that might be similar. I can’t use the normal logoff/shutdown/restart dialogs. If I want to perform any of these actions I have to use the command line shutdown -l and then (assuming I want to sd or rs) use the dialog on the signin dialog.

Well, I went ahead and loaded this service onto my machine. It has done nothing to help my situation.
