For an applet I would currently stay with 1.4
For nearly anything else I would use 1.5, if only
for the fact that 1.4 is already out of the
support matrix at Sun.

Umh, I asked that a year ago ...
nowdays it might be wortwhile asking Java 1.5 or Java 1.6 ?

btw. check this:

not sure if the gc isn't faster along with jvm startup in 1.5, maybe you'll (can) find a comparison somewhere on www.sun.com, let us know then !

Well lots of discussion is already their for this question,
bt surely i would like to use Java5 on server side because of its new handy facilities and for applets we have to be with Java1.4 for some time.

well.....as the technology changes the human has the nature to adopt the new versions.but i'm also using java in my project using java1.4 and i feel relax with that. Until one don't know what are the flaws in older version one may not use the new.so i prefer you to use 1.4 as your daily routine you use bt if 1.5 provides you the facilies that 1.4 doesn't 've......then you know what is better.

We're switching to java1.5, it looks that performance is better. There're more diagnostics utilities and from our experience most of us spending time in finding memory/performance problems
