I got an idea but I need help!!!

By Mike (from Canada) ·
This is what I have been thinking about for a while.

I have 2 computers in my home. 1 is a 486 with 8MB ram running Windows 95 and the other one is a P200 with 32MB ram running Windows 98. I have the network software to connect both computers using a serial cable.
The thing is, the two computers are in different locations. One upstairs, and one downstairs. both of them are approximately 15 meters apart. so what I plan on doing rather than drilling holes through the walls and ceiling and stuff is to create a wireless network. and I plan to use radio waves as a method of transmitting data.

Here are my questions.

Where can I find a resource on making a wireless connection (or better yet, how do I make a pair of walkie talkies? theyuse the same concept as I described)?

How much money (as a guess) do you think this will cost?

If your answer and/or links lead me to some useful information, you get the points.

You can try to buy a ready product that uses wireless networking which requires a wireless access point and a card in each computer.
To create your own wireless protocol:
You can try but unless you now real good machine engineering and machine code you will not be able to do that. Since creating a way for 2 computers to communicate is not the same as sending data over a communication link. You will have to create your own network protocol.

I know that. I'm not asking for another word for my question. I am asking for a resource (for example, a picture) of how to make the actual hardware component. I can make the software, but the wireless network hardware will connect to the computer by a serial connection.

I agree with the above posted Answer, you will need to know how to create your own protocal, which involves writting software that will work with your wireless network, it would be better off buying something already made where the software is compatible. The internet would be your best bet on prices..

and how do I make the hardware component? that is the most important part of the question.

Go with a commercial product. You will need a "network access" box at one end and a wireless networking card at the other. You can add more PC's with wireless network cards in the future.

Look at the wireless networking section at warehouse.com(or your vendor of choice). There are some "network access" boxes in the $130 range. A wireless card runs about $90. As far as I can tell, the wireless cards don't talk to each other, only to the network access station. You should probably checkone of the manufacturer's websites for more information.

and where can I buy this product that is isa compatible or that contains a serial port? nowhere? and I dont wish to spend money on professionally made cards. the question I am asking is where can I find a resource on making the product. not buying it.

Why reinvent the wheel, Wireless networking already exists and can work at 11Mbps ( Ethernet 802.11a & 802.11b) (far faster than any serial link). Or you can look at 'Bluetooth' enabled devices if and when they appear, But if you really want to develop your own solution you will need to be transmitting up into the microwave areas of the frequency spectrum ( 1GHz+ ) this presents major problems to the home constructor as P.C.B. design and manufacture is critical at these frequencies to avoid instability and massive amounts of stray frequencies and interference.

because I want it to be compatible with older computers. the stuff you are talking about may require newer PC's or lots of money I dont want to spend. I would rather make it for say $10 (i think) then buy it for probably $100.

I believe that what you want to do is impossible, especially if you only want to spend $10 per computer. However, every once in a while someone does accomplish what seems impossible and amazes the skeptics.

This site is devoted to IS professionals and as a whole, we don't buy, suggest or implement home-brewed solutions such as what you are planning.

Why don't you check out the Amateur Radio Relay League (www.arrl.org). These guys (and gals) are constantly trying to come up with innovative communications solutions and might have some ideas for you.

IS stands for information systems. what I am trying to do is create a wireless network so that I can pass information between two computers. I'm sure you can point out websites showing me how to make at least a radio or walkie talkies if you dont know it yourself.
