    I-Mac Server

    Locked

    by geordilaforge2000 ·

I just got an I-Mac G4. I’m trying to set it up as a server and want to create a network with my PCs, as connected workstations. I’m having trouble finding info on this topic, can anyone help me or guide me to some useful links?

Take a look at the following location. They have a lot of information on networking Mac’s and Windows systems.

First of all, make sure what you have. Do
you have an iMac or a G4 tower. At this
time, there are no G4 iMacs. That being
said, to make the iMac a true server, you
need to purchase a copy of AppleShare
IP. This full service server package will
      provide everything you need for
      filesharing, web-sharing, email, and user
security. You can create volumes that the
PC users can log into and use. The
downside is the price – about $1000 from
Apple. A second solution might be OS X
Server, $500 from Apple. This is Unix
based, so it’s a bit more stable. However,
I’ve not used it, so I don’t know what the
      limitations might be.

A third, less user friendly, but much
cheaper solution (free) is to configure
your Mac as aweb server. Store the files
you need for your PC in a shared folder,
and access them via your web browser.
OS 9 has a Web Sharing package built in,
      so no additional cost.

Hope this helps some. Let me know if I
      can help further.

It depends on what the PC clients will be
doing. But I have just did the same thing.
The program that I used was Dave. You can
get it a MacMall.com for a good pri

To Correct so previous answers, there are G4 processor based i-macs (ie green, and special edition imacs) The most important topic is what do you want to share between the systems.

      Internet connection:
If you have a high speed access, ie Cable or DSL, just assign the needed tcp/ip, dns, and gateway settings.

      Printers:
Hopefully the printer is a tcp printer and can recognise appletalk (mac printer language). If it does not though, you will have to look into a third party software. I currently use Dave 2.5 and I am very pleased. I will discuss Dave later

      Hard Drive Space:
If you want to share hard disk space, Dave or some equilivent is a MUST. The great thing about Dave is that the setup is exceptionally easy to do on the mac. One thing to note. Make sure that NetBuei is installed on you other pc’s, or else you won’t get any mac to connect to them.

Dave is about $100 and after using it for two years, I swear by it!

      Happy Networking

My best suggestion would be to run NT server on one of the PCs which has pretty good file/print sharing services for the Mac. You can create volumes to share with the Mac(s) and of course with the PCs but there are currently no iMac G4s on the market even since the last Mac World Expo (a few days ago) which did not introduce a G4 iMac. The iMac special edition is not a G4 either.
