i mac system error

By smprficb ·
My friend has an Imac. upon starting up a system error comes up. It says address error and that if I press shift during restart it turns off the extensions. when I do that and then restart the computer the normal way the error message doesnt come upagain and I think the problem went away. But if I shut it down and then turn it back on the error comes back. What is wrong? and what can be done?

thanks

You have an extension conflict caused most probably by a third-party software addition to your system. In addition to holding shift, you should also try holding down space until you open the Extensions Manager (a Control Panel) at startup. If you can do this, choose MacOS 8.x/9.x Base. This will start up with a minimal set of Apple's extensions. Still ok? Try a spacebar restart again, this time choosing MacOS All. Still good? Try adding your third-party extensions (drivers, etc.) one at a time.If either MacOS Base or MacOS All fails to boot, reinstall your operating system.

Oops. I meant to say that you should try holding down the spacebar *instead* of shift to invoke the Extensions Manager. (Holding down space and shift would probably be just the same as holding down shift.)

I tried holding down the shift at startup, but I still get the error message. I can get in by holding the shift key down and I can get into the extensions manager but there are so many different items in there I dont know what to do. Do you think if i reload the system software it might resolve this?

I am in agreement with the answers
already posted but you made a comment
that there are so many Items in the
extentions manger you do not know what
to do !!!!. The extentions manager has
some features that will help you isolate
the causeof the problem. You can
choose and create start-up sets. I would
reccomend you start by using the system
8.x base extentions first and work from
there. Another approach would be to try
using Cassidy & Green's Conflict Catcher

I would want to know if this happened after any new software was loaded or simply on its own. If it was after new software was loaded I would use the approach others have suggested and use the extension manager. If no new software has been loaded,I might be ready to blame a corrupted extension. I would do a clean install of the OS and then compare extensions in the previous system folder. I would one by one add extensions from the previous system folder to the new extensions folder and restart between each addition.
