I need a mentor!

By liquidtrails ·
I was in the Air Force for 12 yrs., and I am now a disabled vet that needs to find a new career. I am interested in getting into the network admin. field. I don't know anyone in this field and I can really use a mentor. I have questions like what education is needed (four year degree or certs.)? Is this job interesting? Do you work long hours? Do you interact with anyone? Is it easy to find a job? How much do you make annually? I really need some direction to help me get started. Thanks in advance.

This isn't a job you can simply go to school for and find a job when you get out. It takes years of experience, coming up through the ranks and learning along the way.

Your best bet would be to look for a Help Desk type of job which would allow you to learn as you go, gaining experience along the way. Then add night classes at the local college, starting with Intro to Computer Science and working up through Network Administration.

Career Counseler

I presume that you have access to some sort of career counseling. If so, start there and see where your aptitudes lay.

A career center can also help with answers to your general questions about any field you have an interest in.

If I were getting into any computer related field right now, I would want a cross of hardware and software knowledge. Programmers for embedded systems that know how the hardware works are a growing field.

Software validation for embedded systems is another area worth looking into.
