I need help seeting up DNS

By drummergod12 ·
I am In the process of setting up a small windows 2000 network. we have verizon DSL and our DNS servers are being provided by verizon. I am trying to set up a domain for my office but i am not sure exactly how to do it. I have active directory set up and DHCP. I have also set up the domain but i need to know how to make my clients resolve Domain names that are not on my network. should they do it automatically. This is the first time that i am attempting this and i am the only Computer Tech in my company. If anyone could please help i would appreciate it.

Hi,

To do this, you need another DNS server which is External to get all the queries from Internet. (This will be the registered one)

Regarding the request from internal, what you need to do is, point your gateway to the router/ISDN router in your DNS server. (all the client will point to this DNS server)

set dhcp to use the DNS server ips given to you by verizon. this will automatically tell your clients which dns servers to use.

your servers active directory name should be your domain name. ie: myserver.mydomain.com

if it isnt you cannot change it without reformat.

first install dns on one of your servers , this will be a active directory intergrated. on the server configuration there is a section for forwarding, use the ip address for the verision's dns for this. Now you have your dns server that forward alloutside dns requests to your isp dns server.
done deal.
