I started work a year ago at a small construction hardware distributer. In the last year I:converted the company from Novell 3.12 to W2K, Replaceed our hubs with switches, created a company web site, installed new servers and backup software & hardware. We opened 2 new offices and I installed new networks there, set up a Citrix server for remote communications. It’s been a lot of fun. The boss is great, he wants to have the best network infrastructure of any of our competitors. I can pretty much do whatever I want to to help the company grow. It’s fairly small right now with 40 users here and 5 at each of our 2 branches. I have a couple of main projects this year, upgrading our point of sale system from DOS to Windows (MS sql server) and I’m working on a company intranet now.
So what’s the problem? The boss wants me to come up with new projects this year. I’m sort of at a loss, (maybe I’m just not creative enough). What types of things can I do help this company? I love the job and the people, and the company is growing. I could probably spend $20,000 dollars or so, hire consultants, whatever I need to improve our network. Does anyone have any ideas for projects? What IT technologies use could companies use? I should add that asa construction firm, many of the users are not power users, and many try to get away from learning anything new. A couple of users are still using WordPerfect for DOS because they don’t want to learn anything new if they don’t have to.
