I nstalling a second drive

Question-I have a pc with winme and an extended d: drive. Can I put a second drive on my pc and install win 2000 without taking a chance on messing with the programs I have installed on my first drive? I know that the second drive will go to d: and the extended dive will be e:-thanks.
