Very interesting and thoughtful response -- thank you.

Ok, I will agree with your reading of the definition of "dumbed down". Too many anti-Apple zealots use the phrase to mean it is incapable of performing tasks that other machines/OSes are capable of when Apple's products are just as capable but only present enough to the user as he knows how to use. With the Mac OS, for instance, it is easily possible to go all the way down to the command line and never even touch the GUI if you know how.

As to my being a novelist, I write science fiction and I tend to write based on conjecture of where I see technology and society is headed in the relatively near future given an unusual trigger and result. My website for that work is down at the moment due to my blocking some hacking attempts I detected and deciding to redesign it.
I am also a computer consultant at the consumer/small business level, helping mostly-retired clients select and maintain the best PC and mobility products for their needs and abilities. I usually recommend Apple's computers for their simplicity and reliability, but I also know that when their experience and software is all Windows based, I'd be stupid to push Apple over another product. My most recent client needed to replace her WinXP PC and while I mentioned a Mac Mini as an economical option, I ended up recommending a Samsung all-in-one desktop instead running Win7. The amount of difference between XP and Win7 is about as much as it is between XP and OS X, but I was able to revert much of the appearance and operation of Win7 to at least look like XP enough for her to get started, though she's still getting used to the things that did change.
