Locked

IBM S50 Issues

By cmiller5400 ·
Hi all, I have a IBM S50 PC that is misbehaving and driving me nuts! It will randomly freeze up, and sometimes just lock the PS/2 keyboard and mouse. I have replaced the power supply and motherboard. I have swapped out the memory and CPU at different stages with the new motherboard with no luck. Any ideas??

If you've swapped out the motherboard, CPU, memory and power supply then the only thing remaining would be one of the drives conflicting or heat. In my experience, though, a conflicting drive would stop POST rather than causing random lockups.

My guess is heat. I'd check that the fans are all facing the correct way. I recently saw a Dell that ran for a year and a half with that big CPU fan blowing in rather than out. It finally acted up when it compacted enough dust on the CPU's heat sink to fully block airflow. I was shocked it ran that long but it exhibited exactly the same symptoms you describe. The KB/mouse would randomly lock up, even in Safe Mode.

Nope, not a heat issue. Happens when cold too.

Also, wanted to clarify that during POST, it will give an error stating that there is a keyboard error. I have swapped out the keyboard too. This is also happening with the replacement motherboard too.

It was the mainboard that was bad. Swapped with another one and the problems went away. Guess the replacement parts have issues too. :)
