IBM - XP home installation

By toomuchwrinkles ·
I have an IBM ThinkCentre that has no OS. I purchased XP Home edition but am unable to get it to function/install properly. I had to use the F12 key to get the system to boot from the CD. From that point it goes thru the initial setup of tranferring files but when the system reboots all I get is a black screen with a cursor OR the IBM startup screen pops up but then freezes. Any ideas for a non-techy home user? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked the BIOS to make sure the Hard Drive is listed as a bootable device.

Yes it is possible to remove/disable the HDD from the bios boot list.

And then the Windows Installed copied files to the HDD then it reboots at that point you do not get XP Installer Starting is that correct?

If that is the case here you need to enter the BIOS and set the HDD in the Boot Order preferably set the Optical Drive First then the HDD and then try restarting the computer it should now start the Windows Installer and tell you that it will take 39 minutes to finish.
