What you described is what happens when the printer does not have postscript installed or enabled. I had this same problem with an HP LaserJet 1100 that I assumed had postscript support. When you select the printer in the chooser, the printer attached to your print server will show up, but if it is not a postscript printer you get garbage when you send a print job.

The 5M should have postscript. Check to make sure the personality is set to auto if there are PCs on the network or just set it to PS if you only have Macs. The R80 probably supports PCL language only. If so, you won't be able to print to it.

There are print servers available that enable Macs to print to PCL printers. Check strydent.com.

There should be drivers for the printers in question. The other person answering the question has a valid point, but you might not have to go as far as buying a new printer or print server software.

Also, there is a program out there that lets you print to almost any known printer in the world. I can't remember the name but if you did a web search or contact me I can get the name for you.

Good Luck!
