    Icon Disappears from TB when minimized

    I have a peculiar situation on a Windows ME machine. When a running programm is minimized for instance Winword the Icon of the program in the Task Bar disappears. ALT-TAB also does not show any thing but CLT-ALT-DEL shows the program as running.Can’t seem to find any reason for this beahviour. Could this be a virus. Anyone who can shed some light on the matter.

      There has been a number of these issues posted lately and if I remember right basically it is a virus. Run some virus detection software with the latest patches and the adaware removal software and I beleive that will clean it up. If not scan through the tech republic section here for others with the same problem, seach using task bar or icon missing. Good luck

        Sorry, I guess I didn’t read it here,I’m searching but not finding it. I do get a number of trade rags as well. Have you recently loaded a new version for aol or netscape? I’ll keep picking my brain til I recall where I saw this but I do know there are answers to it.

      I think this does sound like a virus. Update your virus signature files and run a scan.

      This is apparently caused by a trojan called FriendGreeting. Read about it here:

      (delete any spaces in that URL).

      Uisng add/remove programs, uninstall “WinSrv Reg”, update your virus definitions and run a full scan.

      Here is the cure. Per a newsgroup at Microsoft’s site, one ‘Ron Badour’ advised that this bug is caused by a file/program called WinSrv Reg that comes in as a result of receiving greeting cards(?). So the Cure is to go to the control panel, Add/Remove Programs and see if WinSrv Reg is on the add/remove list. If it’s there remove it and restart.
      As a follow-up, it appears that this WinSrv Reg program gets on a pc in a number of ways (it’s bundled in MP3 software, online games, etc.). It’s a ‘behavioral marketing tool’ brought to your machine courtesy of Permissioned Media.
