Icons all goofed up

By Jennifer.Gardner ·
I have a user whose desktop icons have all changed to the windows symbol. This may or may not have happened after the last security updates. Win2K Pro. Any ideas?

Desktop themes should only affect the system icons, not user installed program icons. System icons can also be changed in Display Properties under Effects.

Each icon can be changed through the properties setting (right click icon and select properties) which may be laborious if you have a lot of icons.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no "global" icon setting in any version of Windows that would change all icons.

Although I haven't seen this one specifically, some malware and viruses will play with icons. Run a virus scan and check for malware with Ad-aware and/or Spybot just to be sure.

Windows maintains a cached copy of all the icons on the system to avoid having to reload the icons every time they are displayed. If this icon cache becomes corrupt then the wrong icons may be shown.
To clear the icons cache make sure you can view hidden files and then open your Windows directory in Explorer and delete the file called "ShellIconCache".

When you restart Windows the icon cache file will be automatically recreated.
