Icons run from pointer after virus

By Nnorsh ·
Received unit after Norton A/V had found and removed 41 viruses. Very slow to load. Mouse pointer either inop or icons scatter when pointer is moved. Keyboard is mostly inop. CD not shown in explorer. Ran Panda remover, no worms found. Ran MSconfigand shut down most superfluous programs. Does OK in safe mode (WIN982e). Still no change in normal mode, problems remain. Suspect damage by virus - open for suggestions. User has lotsa apps - would prefer not to reformat - what's next?

Open C:windows\directory and check for and exe folders that are duplicated, check the file size and more than likely the virus is still present
Create a clean boot disk and lock the disk, boot to command prompt, now with a clean erd anti-virus disk insert in floppy and run from dos mode

This sounds like the w32.magistr.24876@mm trojan virus,
Here's the Norton reference:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html

(There are no spaces in the URL)
They suggest:

1. Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Navigate to the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

4. In the right pane, delete the value which references a file infected by W32.Magistr.23876@mm.
