Use your right mouse button

on the icon and select delete from the menu. It will only send them to the recycle bin so if you find both of the icons are removed, you can restore them.

Like Vanessa asked? Which icons, What is your OS, where are they located. Can you select one and press your DELETE key?

I have seen this before

by w2ktechman In reply to Icons

and I could not delete them or anything. I forgot exactly what was done, but it had to do with recreating the control panel and it was a hassle (a long time ago in NT4). So, I think the best thing to try would be system restore. Else, you can try running a repair from the cd, but I think that failed way back then.
you can however, remove the control panel entries in the reg, and then try a repair? might work. might lose anything else that had an icon there too though (non MS based)

XP
the problem started after I had to do a restore.

This sounds more complicated then

what I have experience with on Windows systems. W2KTechnician may be correct since this happened after you did a restore. You may have to wipe your system completely and then restore it from the original install disks or from good backups.

How you did the restore may have affected what you are seeing. Is it only the control panel or are their other places that you are seeing this issue?

It would be easier to tell you which arn't
19 duplicat or triplicate icons.

So, you wanna get it done

by w2ktechman In reply to Icons

without rebuilding. Ok, a few things to look at. Do a search for *.cpl. make sure that 'hide operating system files' is not selected, and show hidden files is selected.
the list should be in the system32 folder. look for duplicates, and try to remove them here. If there are none here, you may need to look for any that are in dllcache, or prefetch folders.

If you can delete them, this is fine but I warn against theat for right now. Instead, move them to a new folder. If you cannot delete them, then they should be able to be moved.

If there are no duplicates, try logging on as another user and see if the problem carries over, it may just be a corrupt profile. If the other user does not have the issue, remove ntuser.dat from the profile of the affected user and reboot.

post back. -- see, I think better with coffee

Another thought

if you type mmc.exe and setup the group policy editor, I believe there is a location under user settings somewhere for editing the control panel and icons, like only allowing some to be viewed or not viewed.
