ICS Computer hangs / crashes

By XBoss ·
I have a home network of 3 pcs. All network works fine. Very stable. Read and write to all 3 pcs. Share printers and cd drives with no problems. Internet connection sharing (ICS)is installed on one machine. Problems start if I try to access internetfrom one of the other PCs (ie not the ICS pc). I am able to connect to the internet, download, and view web pages etc but Eventually (after about 5 - 10 mins) the sharing pc will hang / crash. Accessing the internet direct from the sharing pc is nota problem. Whatever happens to the sharing pc the other 2 pc's remain on the network and continue to communicate with each other without problem. The ICS machine connection is lost. The ICS machine connects to the internet via a cable modem connected to the usb. The usb uses the same IRQ as the network card. Although Windows device manager does not show any conflict, do you think that this might be the root of the problem? If so, how do I change it safely. Or could it be another problem.

Would be good to hear from anyone who could help or direct me to where I could find it.

Many thanks

Mike

Apologies for removing this question earlier today. Thought that had resovled with TCPIP addressing changes. False alarm. ICS looks like its set up fine. But network connection still falls over as described.

Hi

To change the irq safely you'r greatest chance is to change the network cards PCI Slot, this will most certain take you on track with the irq business..

If you have a cable modem you should be able to connect that with the RJ-45 connector? If so, then you might try adding a second network card into your ICS and run a NAT config on that one, XP and win2000 server has this built in..

If I have been of any help please ask me further, use the email adress..

Thanks for the comment re the IRQ. Do you think that this is actually part of the problem though?

Thanks for the comments re XP and 2000 but I'm running 98SE on the ICS machine. I have thought about just putting another network card into the ICS machine and running the cable modem from there. The problem does not appear to be with the cable modem connection though. After the network connection bombs out on the ICS machine it can quite happily connect to the internet. It is when I then try toshut that machine down that it will hang.

Hello Mike
You seem to have the exact setup as myself. I have all pc's running win98se. You didn't mention what kind of hub.

I am using a Linksys Rotor and all NIC's have to be 10/100 or they will not be assigned their own IP addresses. Checking your NIC's might be one way to begin troubleshooting.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. All NIC and cables are ok. All PCs running 98SE. 3 Com office connect 4 hub.

Is your Cable modem running off the usb like mine? If so please let me know how you got it to work.

I'm giving it to the weekend before I give up and go setit up with 2 ethernet cards with one attached to Cable modem. Leave usb free to do nothing.

Hi Mike

No, I'm not using a usb hub connection.

Connecting direct with NIC's is too high a security risk for me. I've been bitten.

Here's a site where you may find some good help.

Thanks again. I'd already looked at that site. It's the set up that I'll probably end up with. (but not the one I was trying to achieve)

I've got an ethernet hub. 3 PCs plugged into it. One of the pc's has the cable modem plugged into its usb.Do you know if what I'm trying to achieve is actually possible. What I can't work out is that the whole thing works for 5 mins before the ICS machine network connection crashes. Perhaps the problem is with the NIC card in the ICS machine.

Sorry about rejecting your answers. Do you know how I can rate your question with a positive but keep the question open? This is the first time I've used this site.

Hi Mike
I can handle SOME rejection :).

Re-your Hub. If no one comes in with knowledge of your hub, maybe start a new thread with USB HUB CONNECTION HELP as a header. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer for tech help? Might be just a glitch or a defective hub.

I will tell you it wasn't long before I got a trojan using a straight connection and I would not recommend it to anyone. With present system, no problems and it has a built-in firewall.

Good Luck Mike.

Hi Cheyra

Decided to go for the 2 NIC card option. But then I lost the network on the original NIC. Turned out that Port 1 on the hub was blown. Could this have really been the cause of the original problem? I guess we'll never know. I'm not going back now that all is working fine.

Thanks for all your posts.

I abandoned USB for a straight ethernet setup with my three PC's connecting to a Compaq gateway router. The cable modem needs to connect to the gateway also, and not to a PC or the PC connected to the cable modem may have problems with the internetservice. I have a laptop connecting by wireless and, ironically, has the least connectivity issues. It was also typical on my LAN that the computers connected only to the router could always talk to each other, but the computer taking a direct feed from the cable modem by USB kept dropping its internet connection.
