I’d like to format…

by mslaffsalot . Updated 25 years, 5 months ago

I have a “dead” computer that was given to me. I’m trying to start it w/floppy (won’t do anything onit’s own, no OS) whether I try to start it with or w/o CD I get the following error msg:

Preparing to start our computer.
This may take a few minutes. Please wait…

Windows 98 has detected that drive C does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition. There are several Possible causes.

1. The drive may need to be partitioned. To create a partition on the drive, run FDISK from the MS-DOS command prompt.

I never geet the prompt back at the end of the error msg. Just a flashing curser that doesn’t respond to the keyboard.

2. You may be using 3rd-party disk partitioning software. yadda, yadda, yadda…

I’m not and the previous owner never has used partitioning software.

3. Some viruses also cause your drive C to not register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.

The previous owner said it worked fine until it chocked upgrading to win98 and then he tried to fdisk/format and never got it to work again.

I’d like to use it to practice networking w/a different OS on it, but I have to get it running to load an OS. Any tips?

Thanks, Tracey
