IDE / ATAPI Service Not Starting

By chris ·
A problem has only just occured on my Compaq Proliant 2500 Server. I am running NT4.0 Server SP6a and tonight, I lost access to my IDE devices (in NT only). The IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2) device is not starting and I don't know why. I cannot start the service as the server thinks it's already running (though its not). I recently changed an IRQ for a Yamaha sound card (in the bios settings) but I don't know what the previous system settings were (or should be)

IDE / ATAPI Service Not Starting

If your server has the standard Compaq system partition and you can boot into that, I would run the diagnostics there first and see if the IDE is recognized at the hardware level. If you don't have the 36meg system partition, you can download the diagnostics (current version is 2.51a), make up a diskette set and boot to run it.

After that, I would run the Compaq SSD to reinstall the drivers and then reboot to NT and see if that solves the problem.

The normal IRQ for your IDE is 14 and I can't imagine that a sound card would even think it could live there but stranger things have happened.

I had somehow inadvertantly disabled the integrated fixed disk controller at the hardware level
