ide channels

can i plug my cd-rw into another ide and make it a master also. just like my hard drive and my cd-rom.or do i have to configure it and make it a slave.

Most motherboards have 2 IDE connectors.

If you wish to copy CDs along with data files from the hard drive, your connections should be as follows:

Hard drive Primary IDE Master
CD Drive Primary IDE Slave

CD-RW drive Secondary Master or Slave

If your motherboard has an auxiliary IDE controller, I recommend the following:

Hard drive Auxiliary IDE Primary Master

CD Drive Primary IDE Slave

CD-RW drive Secondary Master or Slave

If you install a plug-in IDE controller card to gain additional IDE channels, I would still follow the above, as the new controller is apt to be faster than the one on the motherboard.

In addition to drive orientation and jumper settings, make sure that the DMA mode is set properly in BIOS settings for all drives.
