IDE drive swap electronics

By Cazen ·
I have a WD200BB-00CVB0 Western Digital 20GB hard drive that was zapped and the electronics are done for.
I can get another WD2000BB-????? drive with the same specifications and swap the circuit boards to try recovering the data. Will this work or is the electronics calibrated per-drive to the physical motor, platters, etc.?
Need definitive answer.
TIA

In theory, any WD drive of the same series will work as a source for the drive controller.

I do recommend if possible that you use a controller from the same model drive.

CAUTION: make sure to follow ALL static handling precautions when swapping the drive electronics.
A wrist strap is a must.

I have suggested this 'fix' to several peers who have had drive problems, and it has worked successfully.
