      Couple of possibilities here

You need to set the Jumper on the IDE Drive to Master and plug it onto the end of a 80 Way IDE Lead that is plugged into the M’Board at the other end and make sure that it is correctly connected tot he M’Board and HDD.

Then Open the BIOS and make sure that the HDD is being correctly identified by the Hardware and save the changes as you exit the BIOS.

If it’s not appearing in Windows you will need to go to the Drive Management and allocate a Drive Letter. If the Drive Management insists that the drive is not formatted you need to connect it to a XP System as it was formatted by a old version of XP prior to SP2 and neither Vista or 7 will be able to read this HDD.

If the system doesn’t boot into 7 but attempts to load XP this is because you have fitted the IDE Drive and it has become the Primary Boot Device some BIOS’s work this way and if that happens you need to connect it via a USB Lead and not the IDE Lead as the System will not be able to locate the necessary files on the Primary Boot partition to load 7.

Thanks for the advice. I tried your suggestions. Thk God the system always boots with no issues. I tried booting to the old winxp hdd, drive started to boot in new pc, but hung up with an error in Seagate overlay program for large drives. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Here you need to do a Repair Install of XP

That will rewrite the HAL File and allow the system to boot XP. Though you may need to reinstall the Seagate Overlay before proceeding any further on the new system. Although it shouldn’t be required because it’s there it has to be redone to properly address the new IDE Controller so that the drive can be correctly mapped. 😉

“Seagate overlay program for large drives” — apparently Seagate dynamic drive overlay utility was used to partition and format hard disk (needed when disk size is not supported by BIOS). Once that is done, hard disk can only be accessed when installed on original system or installed as boot disk on a similar PC.
