IDE Hdd problem

By test ·
I am trying to repair a friends pc which stopped booting (wont even go through post) I disconnected the hdd and post screen appeared and detected the cd rom ok, I then tried a spare hdd and the same problem persisted, tried the original hdd in a spare pc and it worked fine, I have tried changing the cables but to no avail when any hdd is connected the pc powers up but just sits there with a blank screen

Power or motherboard

by Toivo Talikka In reply to IDE Hdd problem

Maybe the power supply has had it and runs out of puff when the HDD is connected. Alternatively, the motherboard may have developed a problem.

You can first try swapping the power supply and see if that helps.

Tried new P/supply

spare power supply did not make any difference so it is begining to look like the m/board as all other componets seem to be working, thanks for the help.

Try second IDE channel

Try connecting your HDD to the secondary IDE channel, change the BIOS to recognise it and see if it boots
