IDE Problem: No Masters, only Slaves

By BarclayB ·
I am having a problem with an FIC VA 503+ motherboard that refuses to recognize any IDE devices as long as one of them is configured as 'Master'. If I connect and configure one device per channel as 'Slave', it recognizes them properly and will bootto the operating system (Win 95), although much slower than normal. I have tried new cables, various hard drives and cd-roms, checked the settings in the bios and have flashed the bios to the latest version.

IDE Problem: No Masters, only Slaves

Hmmm - Only a guess but if you might be using a typical Western Digital Hard drive, then the WD drive located on a channel by itself should not have a jumper placed in the "master" position. There should be no jumpers on the blocks if the drive is the only drive on the channel...use the master block only if it is located with another device, obviously slave, on the same channel...hope this hit the target...

Johnny!

Unfortunately, I have already tried this, as the job I am trying to do is to add a new drive and keep the old one as well, but no luck. The problem also affects the cd-rom and cd-rw the customer wants to have in the machine- I can only have one device per cable, whether it is 2 hdd or 1 hdd and 1 cd-rom I am trying to accommodate. Thanks though

Dear Barclay,
This problem can have several causes. The problem is somewhere in the system that generates the SPSYNCH:CSEL signal that is found on pin # 28 of the IDE cable. If you have used cables from your "Y" IDE cable box instead of the "straight" IDE cable box, your multimeter will show an "open" on pin 28 between the two end connectors. If you don't have a multimeter at hand, use one of those cheap two connector IDE cables you get with CD-ROMS from I/O Magic, HI-VAL, etc. (We keep several old "known good" 300-540 meg HDs with these cables for troubleshooting.)(Yes, there is a use for those cables.)
If the system works normally with the two connector cable, you have "Y" cables. Plug the center connector into the motherboard and set the drives to CSEL (Cable Select)(The cable end with pin 28 grounded is the master end, and the end connector with pin 28 open is the slave). If it doesn't work, you are going to have to determine if the problem is in the BIOS or in the chipset.
Disable the IDE controllers in the BIOS (under Integrated Peripherals). Install an old IDE controller board in an ISA slot, and hook up the HD. If it works, the problem is in the IDE controller on the motherboard. If this is the problem, use a PCI IDE controller. (Circuit City has a free after rebate offer on Maxtor UDMA 100 controllers this week.)
If you have to go deeper than this, you should e-mail me. (There are other causes.)

Thanks for the reminder, I had an old ISA card around and this is indeed the problem. However, I think I will recommend replacing the motherboard, as I am now having problems getting the printer to work on LPT1, and I have a feeling the MB is onits way to the great parts bin in the sky.

Tried it, no luck there either, although that is probably because I don't have the proper cabling for CS as I understand it.
