IDE Raid Vs Firewire

By jingernut ·
Hi Guys

I just wanted everyone's thoughts on what they think is the best, IDE Raid or firewire?. I am under the impression that firewire is not as fast as IDE Raid at the current time but firewire should be bridging the gap with the release of firewire 2. The advantages and disadvantages of each technlogy would be nice if anyone knew this.

I look forward to hearing your views

Cheers

Martin

IDE Raid Vs Firewire

Martin,
In my mind, you are talking apples and oranges here.
IDE RAID is not any faster than standard IDE.
The advantage of a RAID configuration is system data integrity and reliability.
Raid arrays, whether IDE or SCSI are normally only used onservers where zero data loss and downtime is required.

Firewire is a standard for external and portable device data transfer.

While firewire has faster bit transfer rates than IDE, IDE has faster net byte transfer rates because it is a parallel data bus.

If you are looking for the fastest drive setup, you should install the highest speed SCSI components that you can afford.

SCSI Raid is still King.

Some of the Firewire systems use scsi drives then interface to the system with firewire.

As the chipsets get faster the new technology will pass the older sets.

SATA (serial ata) is coming on strong.

The only advantage to IDE raid is the cost. Drives are cheaper.

Then you have the solid state drives.

Now them things is fast.
