IDE Raid?

By TobeJ ·
Hi there,

We have just got into the W2000 world, we have a new Compaq server / raid 2 configed with hot spare for DHCP / DNS / AD. We do not have another domain controller for the site, so I was thinking of using one of our desktops for a backup.

2 Days later

Now since I was thinkning of this a little more, I was also thinking of adding a couple of things to the server, like a tape device & Raid card so that we could get some file and print services out of it on top of of the domain backup duties.

Hardware is a IBM M-41 2.2G processor, add Mem it to equal 2G, single nic... etc

First of all does this sound like a good idea? If yes should I go with a raid card or just mirror another drive? Do you know any good IDE backup devices?

Any ideas would help.

Tx

Toby

IDE Raid?

by csmith In reply to IDE Raid?

Starting from the last:
When IDE backup is requested, we are still installing Travan (Seagate) tape backup for small businesses.
Advantages: If the server has a free slot, then the drive can be internal. Value.
Yes, Mirror.

Remember, you need a secure offsite storage place for the backup tapes, so when the fire occurs in the server room, the tapes are not also destroyed.

IDE Raid?

You have a server...IDE RAID is for desktop power users and home machines and teh CDROM drive in the server. If you have SCSI drives in your server you're wasting speed and system resources with RAID2. You should go with either RAID1 (disk mirroring or duplexing if you have redundant controllers) or step up to a RAID 5 array.

If you bought an actual server box from Compaq then it already has a RAiD card built in, most likely this is a simple RAID 1 card...it would be disguised as a SCSI connector on the motherboard or as a SCSI connector on an addon card in the box...connect two SCSI drives and you're ready to rock.

Add an LVD SCSI card from Adaptec to the server to control a SCSI DAT drive...don't bother with IDE backup devices.
Be careful how much you add to this server though...MS operating systems have a way of complaining when you have them do too much. 2K is vastly superior to NT in this regard, but its still a concern.
