i have a dell e 520 that does not have an ide controller on it, so i got an ide to sata controller and have tried to boot from this drive but it wont let me. does this mb not support this at all, how do i get acess to this drive.

But assuming that is what you have and have just called it the wrong thing you need to install the Drivers for it to work.
This will involve doing a Repair Install of Windows and when the first blue screen appears pressing the F6 Key and placing a Floppy with the Drivers for this Adapter copied to the Root of the Floppy into the A Drive when prompted and pressing the Enter Key.
If you don't have a Floppy Drive you can make a Slipstreamed Install Disc with a product like nLite for XP or vLite for Vista available from here
