IDE transfer modes

By nook99 ·
If I set my IDE drives up like this:

Primary master = 9gbHDD ATA-100
Primary slave = CD-Rom UltraDMA/33
Secondary master = 40gbHDD ATA-133
Secondary slave = CD-RW UltraDMA/33

what effect will the CD devices have on the transfer rate?

It seems like in this setup, the HDD transfer rate for each channel would only be UltraDMA/33, not ATA-100. Doesn't each IDE channel revert to the lowest common transfer speed?

Is this correct?

Thats what I've read in other posting here, an answer may be to install a pci ide card for the hdd and leave the cd's on the motherboard as masters there.

Depends, but usually you are correct. It depends on the systemboard and whether it supports different PIO modes on the same channel.

See the following:

http://mrkay.org/zenpc/ref/hdd/if/ide/confChannels-c.html

and the next four links, until you read the following:

http://mrkay.org/zenpc/ref/hdd/if/ide/confTiming-c.html

Which is key to what you are asking... but if you read through all four pages, you'll have a better understanding of the whole of it.

Correct

As a general rule each IDE channel will work only at the speed of the slowest device on it. Also the higher speeds will only be available if you have 80 pin cables.

Best speeds would be obtained by having a 80 pin cable connecting your two HDDs on one channel (say the primary) and both CD devices on the other channel. Thus you would have ATA 100 on the hard drives and ATA 33 on the CDs. This would triple you hard drive operation speed.
