IE 5 - Upgrade 40-Bit Cipher Strength to

By LRClifford ·
I received a Dell Dimension XPS T700r, which has been updated with BIOS A08, in January 2000. The software is Windows 98 Second Edition, IE 5.0, and MS Outlook Express 5.

IE has 40-bit cipher strength. I want to change it to 128-bit cipher strength. This is required by many sites.

I called Dell and asked why they installed the 40-bit version when a PC they sent me in July 1998 had 128-bit. They said it was because of the current law suites that Microsoft is going through. That seems strange, but I could not dispute it. Their only suggestion was to check the Microsoft knowledge base. I have tried, but not succeeded.

I would appreciate any assistance on how to upgrade. Thank you

Hi, just open IE5.0 and click on the help in the menu bar. Click on "About internet explorer" and you'll see the version number and below that Cipher strength - click on update information and you'll be linked to microsoft's upgrade page. To recheck after installing, the version should be 5.00.2919 (make sure it states 29). I hope this helps.

Click on the START button in Windows 98. Then goto WINDOWS UPDATE. You will go out to the Microsoft Internet site and it will show you a list of files that can be upgraded on your computer. The 128-bit will be one of the choices. It can only be installed by itself. Good luck. Let me know if you need anymore info.
