IE 5.5 and popup banners

By moverby ·
I have a user that is running NT 4.0 sp6a and IE 5.5. The user is getting unwanted popup banners during the day even when not using the internet. We are using NAT on our firewall so the ip address of the computer is not broadcast over the internet. It happens about 1 hour apart. I have deleted all cookies, temporary internet files and history, rebooted and it still happens. There are no scheduled tasks either.

How do I clear the history for the address in IE 5.5. Each time I sart typing an address it drops down with addresses that match.

Thanks, Mike

To clear the history in ie5.5:
Tools --> Internet Options --> click on Clear History button on the General tab.

For an effective (free) pop-up stopper:

To clear address history, first click on Tools, Internet Options, and the Clear History button on the General tab. Next, go to the Content tab, click on Autocomplete, and uncheck Web Addresses.

If you want to stop those popup banners, there are any number of 3rd party programs which will do it for you. Here's two free ones:

If your getting popups even when not on the net you might want to update your virus program & do a scan of the system.
Also you might want to download AD-Aware from this site & run it.

There's also a lot of info if you click on the more resources button along the top at this site.

There are many types of adware/spyware that firewalls do not protect against, one of which is cydoor which is bundled within file sharing programs such as Kazaa, Imesh, & others. The host programs will not work if you remove these parts, & their showing up in a lot more programs, since they help pay the bills.
Ad-Aware is just one program that will show you whether their on your system, virus scanners & firewalls don't stop them.

Yep. Sounds like spyware to me.
One that is notorious is New.Net, which does come with the file sharing programs.
Check Task Manager to see if it is running.
If so, End Task it, and uninstall any programs on this machine that are not company programs (i.e. Imesh, et al.)
