IE 5.5 SP2

By brian ·
Does anybody know where I can get this SP in its entirety? I have found ftp sites with the individual cab files but I prefer to have a zipped or exe file since I have a slow connection.

If you have W95 or 98, you can download and save the files from Microsoft.

Just select custom, and advanced when you run the setup program, and select the download only option.

If your connection gets disrupted, just run iesetup again, and thedownload will resume where you left off.

Then, copy the files to another drive/folder to save them.

There are 49 files, 29 MB total.

Since most of the files are already compressed archives, I find it hard to believe that the ZIP file can be smaller than the download from Microsoft.
I suspect that whoever told you that the ZIP was so small zipped the leftover files from an install, which are only about 1/2 of the required files.
Normally, when you ZIP compressed files (CAB files are compressed) the ZIP file is actually larger than the original do to the added error recovery data.
Try zipping a few JPEG files, and you will see what I mean.

If what you are looking for is a smaller browser, check out www.mozilla.org
If you really want to go small, download the Phoenix browser from them.
Mozilla is 11MB, Phoenix is 8MB

Both Mozilla and Phoenix are executable compressed archive files.

I find that Windows Update does pretty well at keeping your system up to date (including the sp2 service packs for ie). Go to link and push product updates. Their system will scan your computer (no information is collected, so they say) and give you list and ability to download windows and IE updates. This is collected in a file and future scans will refer to the history of your downloads to find only those updates that you may need.

You can go to MS and dwonload the installer. When you go to do the install specify that you want the installation files copied over to your PC.

If you want the whole kit (IE and SP5.5) go to evolt.org where they archive just about every browser I have ever heard of.
