IE browser problems

By olprof67 ·
I'm a low-level tech rep for a major ISP. In dealing with inability to browse and or complaints of pages loading slowly, one of the first things we check is the version of the customer's browser, and whether the border indicates that the browser was migrated from another provider.

If we find this to be the case, we'll generally refer the customer to Microsoft to download a compatible service pack. Until recently, we'd been able to advise the caller to download the browser to the desktop in the from of a setup icon, then remove its predeccessor via the Add/Remove programs function before installing. Recently, however, several callers we've referred have advised that the desktop download option is no longer available.

In addition, on the advice of a colleague with a stronger background, we've never advised the installation of anything newer than IE 5.5 with Windows ME, and until recently, on Windows 95/98 as well.

Two nights ago, I took a call from a customer citing slow browsing. The Help/About menu clearly identified the browser as IE 6.0.2900, but the top border still made reference to an ISP she'd dropped several months previously.

So if anyone can shed some further light on exactly what can be expected during and after a browser upgrade, It would be appreciated. We'd also be interested in learning whether any spyware can be removed by changing a browser.

And thanks from another middle-aged "Internet Cadet".
