IE browser won’t connect
Lockedby rovoco · about 20 years, 10 months ago
User is running Windows 95 (gasp!) on a Sony Vaio
PCV220 with 64MB of SDRAM. Browser version is
Internet Explorer 5.0. Using AOL version 5.0b.
AOL connects fine for e-mail, but will not connect
to the Internet. With AOL on line, IE will not
connect either. Winsock.dll and Wsock32.dll files
are both version 4.0 or later. Original Sony CDs
are available, but do not want to restore, since
this would wipe out his aps and put him back to
AOL 3.0, etc. The .cab files for Win95 are on
the hard drive. Is this a TCP/IP problem? I have
suggested that he upgrade to WIN98SE, but he is
worried about Sony proprietary drivers, etc. The
system has an ISA 33.6 Kbps Flex56 Lt Win Modem
card which is obviously slow, but appears to work
o.k. Any help would be appreciated.Topic is locked -

double click “my computer”
double click “control panel”
double click “network”
look in the list of networking protocols, MAKE SURE that “client for microsoft networks” is in the list, and remove microsoft vpn support if it’s there.if client for ms networks is NOT in that list, that is your problem. you may need the win95 cd.

Networking protocols are all o.k. I tried pinging 127.0.0.1
and got an error 6 message stating that Winsock configuration
was faulty. Also may have some corrupted .vxd driver files.

Try going to a command prompt and pinging a URL or a known Ip address. If you can you still have a winsock problem. You could also tell him eventually he is going to have to upgrade better now then later.

Thanks. I convinced the customer to take the plunge and
installed Win 98 SE as an upgrade. Sony drivers worked fine,
and he is happy.

this used to work fine, then stopped? or is the AOL account new? and you can’t get it working? did user get broadband?
I would call AOL tech support for this…
i wouldn’t upgrade that old thing to 98, you will be sorry because of massive performance hit.-

AOL account is current, not new. Using modem to connect, not
broadband. May have no choice but to upgrade to WIN98. Will
try to add up to 384 MB of SDRAM.

Check the DNS settings, too. Try pinging an external site using its dotted numerical address and its URL. If the dotted address pings back, but the URL doesn’t, the PC is using the wrong DNS server or has none specified.

Can’t ping an external site, no response. Using PPP, not DNS server address.

If you can’t ping 127.0.0.1, then your tcp/ip protocols are probably cactus.
You could try removing the TCP/IP protocols from network properties (control panel, network), then re-installing them – you will need the Win 95 disk, but you may find it easier to re-install the operating system and the application software from a clean install.
I agree with sgt_schultz that win98 on that machine would be more than a little pedestrian, even with the extra ram, and I certainly would not upgrade to Win98, I would do a clean install. If you upgrade the current system, then you stand a good chance of taking the problem with you into Win 98.
If it is going to take you more than three hours to fix the problem, back up the data, email, favourites, fonts, etc, then blow the thing away and re-install Win95 from the original setup disk. The client will love it, as it will run crisp and clean with the new installation.
If you re-install, be careful of installing IE6 with that system. It does cause some mischief with Windows 95/98.

Thanks. The Win 98 SE upgrade works fine and I reinstalled
IE 5.0 with latest updates. Operation is stable. With the
added memory, the speed is not all that bad.

1) Scan virus first.
2) Verify network settings by using ping and ipconfig. If you can’t ping 127.0.0.1, go to back to 1) or remove and re-install TCP/IP. If you can’t ping the router ip, use ipconfig to make sure they are in the same subnet. If you can’t ping outside ip or public ip, make sure the computer have correct default gateway. If you can ping public ip but not web site like yahoo.com, check the DNS settings.
3) Make sure the Use a Proxy Server check box is unchecked if you do not use a proxy server. To do this, go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings.
4) Disable or remove any software like Comet Cursor may cause IE problem. You can use msconfig to disable.
5) Make sure that there are no parental restrictions on the account after installing ICS with AOL.
6) Check for multiple instances of the Wsock32.dll, Winsock.dll, and Wsock.vxd files. Also check the dates and versions of these files. Rename any file that is not in the appropriate folder (Wsock32.dll and Wsock.vxd should be in the Windows\System folder, and Winsock.dll should be in the Windows folder).
7) Clean cookies and Internet Temp files.
8) You may want to logon another user.
9) You may want to use msconfig disable some software such as Xupiter, Gator and Comet Cursor.
10) Re-install IE or upgrade it. We may wan to rename all Winsock.dll, Wsock.vxd and Wsock32.dll before the installation.

Thanks. After installing Win 98 SE upgrade and IE 5.0 with
updates, the PC ran fine. Added memory helped and it is not
all that slow. Also had customer subscribe to new antivirus
service.

I would agree that it is due to a protocol corrupted. Usually AOL appends itself to the TCP/IP/AOL which cuases issues. When I troubleshooted dialup it was the number one issue because AOL software tries to take over the protocol. Sometimes you have to uninstall communications in the add/remove programs to solve issue but leave that as last resort. I hate to tell you to uninstall/reinstall the protocol due to the sketchy re-recognition issues with 95 but thems the breaks. You could also call the provider to get the DNS no#s to put into the dialer to help assist for a better connection.

Also have you installed another browser like Netscape or whatever browser? If both are experiencing the same issue then its difinitley the TCP/IP, if only IE experiences it you know the browser is hosed.

Thanks. I would dearly love to get this guy to move away
from AOL, but no go. I advised him to stay away from the
latest upgrades if version 5.0 is working o.k. It seems
to be and I am telling him that “If it ain’t broke, don’t
fix it.”
