IE can't remember my MSN passport

By LanMan Phil ·
I just installed Norton Personal Firewall. Now when I open Internet Explorer, it makes me login with my Microsoft Passport everytime before going to my homepage, which is a personalized MSN page, but in the past, it always knew my passport and went directly to the page. It remembers my e-mail address (username) but won't remember the password.

This is good from Security Point of view. If the computer you are using is a public computer it is VERY GOOD to not store password in IE. It is extremely highly recommended not to store passwords in IE. Chances are there that somebody may misuse this data which is stored in your computer even if this is your personal system though hacking, spyware, adware, etc. You are a LAN Administrator, I beleive. You should be knowing these things. The most ethical way to store passwords is to store in your HUMAN MENTAL MEMORY only, security wise naturally, even if not Firewall is installed.
Thanks & Best of Luck

I think that you'll find that MSN isn't the only application that this is happening in. It should be happening with any Web Site where you have to enter a User Name & Password to access.

This really is Basic Security and something that should be used on every computer particularly if it is used for business or any form of On line Banking!

Just be thankful that the package that you installed has taken this option out of the Windows OS and placed it where is actually should be in the hands of the user so that no one can use this terminal to access unauthorized sites or use your identity by actually using your terminal to pass themselves off as you.

In one case recently here on TR there was a long discussion about a company who lost $90,000.00 US from the Bank of America through a brogan sending keystrokes to a remote site and that is currently before the courts as the company affected is complaining even though they had no AV or Spy Ware programs installed and they serviced the Computer Industry so they should have known better.

While I agree with the others involving secuirty issues, no one seemed to answer your question so I will try. The only thing I can think of is to check you Internet Explorer options. Go to tools, interntet options. Go to the Content tab and click on autocomplete at the bottom. Make sure there is a checkbox in usernames and passwords and prompt me to save passwords. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the answer, for whatever reason it finally started working. I'd been in those options at least three times changing settings and changing them back trying to get it to work, and suddenly, with the same settings I'd started with, it started working last night. Gotta love Windows and its registry! I understand what the others were saying about security, but don't think I'll lose much sleep if someone hacks in and changes my home page.
