IE Default web page keeps changing

By jbeaucaire ·
I have a WIN2K system with IE 6.1. I ran all the updates to WIN2K & IE from MS. I ran Aa-Aware, Tuneup Utilities, Registry Mechanic and Spybot. Still after running all these programs and I made my default home page to be MSN.com after starting IE 3 times it reverts back to the web page of www.hotwebsearch.com with all kinds of popups. How can I get rid of this once & for all without formating the drive?

Thanks

Sounds like a common hijack that CWshredder removes.
Here's the download link:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

Make sure no spaces (%20) are inserted in the link, Tech Repubic does that to posts sometimes.

CW shredder will remove this buut you might want to run IESpyAd to help prevent futher hijacks that will pop ads etc. IESpyAd just adds a bunch of entires to your certificates list in IE and blocks the known offenders like a spam blocker's RBL list.

IESpyAd: http://tinyurl.com/zoh7 (About a third of the way down the page.)

NOTE: after removing the hijack with CWShredder you will need to reset the default IE home page.

From the main IE window, click Tools>Internet Options, you can enter the name of your default homepage in the first box.

I had that same problem with some of the computers I oversee. I found that the program hijackthis works great. Be carful of what you get rid of. Even though it makes a backup of what it some of what it comes up with is legit. Here is the link to cross reference the items it finds to see whether or not you want to get rid of the item. http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html#cwshredder
It works.

What I was trying to say before my brain and fingers went seperate directions was "Even though it makes a backup copy of what you get rid of some of the items it will list after the scan are legitimate.
