IE FAVORITES LINKS DO NOT WORK

By makitel ·
I have several computers who's links in IE do not work. The icons associated with them do not appear and they have the "progam" icon that does not associate them with IE. (no IE icon assoc) Is there a fix. I know that the systems are clean of viruses. So where do I go from here??? I have the lates updates installed also.

There are a few things you can try, but only two things come to mind.

First, I'd go to Windows Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) and see if your machine needs an update. Sometimes an update will show as being needed if a considerable change to your application has changed or corrupted, rendering the application incorrectly configured. So, I've found in my experience anyway.

The other choice would be to check to see if your favorites (URL's) are within your profile in their appropriate place. Most OS's put them in a folder within your profile named "Favorites". And, if so, check to see if your permissions on your system is still labeled at least to 'change'. This will make your links inoperable if you don't at least have change permissions. Permissions throughout your computer could cause other weird things to occur as well, so figure out if you have any other weird things happening. This would be a primary place to research.

What does the "link" do when you click on it? double-click?

If the "program chooser" comes up choose IE out of the list and check the "Always use this program to open these files" checkbox. "program chooser" says "Open With..." at the top.

Have you tried to "drag and drop" it into IE?
Does the web page come up?
Are you connected to the internet?
Is the URL vaild?

had a co-worker who had this happen, so I started checking around. didn't find much that worked. I do not use ie on my personal computer so never checked but for whatever reason, the favorites where there like the co-workers, but icons were generic and nothing happened when you clicked on them...hmmm...

only thing I can think of are recent windows updates that we ran recently or combofix...I did run on both computers recently.

the fix, I went into add/remove programs and removed ie, put it back in, bingo...works like a champ now....
