IE no error 404 -> search site

By alauck ·
A client running Windows XP/Internet Explorer 6 recently complained that when they type in a URL that is incorrect or type in the first part of a URL and press CTRL-ENTER to complete the URL they are taken to a search page provided by instead of receiving the Internet Explorer error page.

I know how to fix pirated home page settings but I cannot find what is causing this recent error-page change. I've run several adware utilities on the system to detect any spyware/adware that may have caused the change.

Anyone run into this type of behavior and successfully fixed it?

run spybot , can find a link to it on on the links page.

even if spybot doesn't find the spyware, you can go to the tools section, and click on "browser pages" to see and change the default internet search page

Yep. is spyware. Gotta run a spyware removal program to get rid of it.
Personally, I recommend Ad-Aware:

check the hosts file c:\windows\drivers\etc. If you see that there are additions made within the file delete the hosts file. Windows will recreate it at the next reboot.
