IE "Page cannot be displayed"

By Chiliman ·
IE 5.50 on W98. No DNS error number shows on the error page, ie: 400, 500 etc. Can't ping Cable router gateway/DHCP, but gets/refreshes DHCP address. Both the Security and Advanced tabs are missing from IE Tools/internet options/. He has "Content Advisor" turned on, I tried disabling it w/o luck. I REM'd out Load=PTSnoop.exe and Run= C:\windows\system\cmmpu.exe from win.ini. I plugged this PC into my home Router and cannot map via address to my own PC, yes they are different workgroups. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried removing IE5.5 with something like ieradicator, then re-installing IE?

Bit of a shot in the dark I know but it may help

Upgrade IE to 6.0 as 5.50 is corrupted. This should disable content advisor. Also do you have antivirus software? If not it could also be a virus

I have looked for a Hosts file and find only the sample. At Browser load I get "Check for missing content advisor settings" dialog. There are multiple adapters listed, I removed AOL adapters.

HereInOz, Searching this site I don't find this utility. Do you know where I might find and read up on it.

I've tried installing IE6.0, I got "System restrictions" dialog, I turned off "Content Advisor" (had to PW in)and cold booted. Coming up the system bios could not find the hard drive, I went into setup and pointed it back again, system came up Ok but again I got "System restrictions" at IE6.0 install. I had noticed this BOIS losing the hard drive a few days ago while working on this issue. I have virus protection but don't know about last signature update. Children, god bless them, have installed KAzaa and something called Save, the readme mentions bundling w/Kazaa like programs. I don't know when they installed this stuff. Thanks.

This issue might not be strictly program related, I cannot ping this machine's IPaddress from another windows PC on the same home router/switch/DHCP server, and cannot ping to another PC from it. As I said in my original note, I cannot ping the Router/DHCP server, nor can I ping another PC, from this suspect PC.

I uninstalled the nic, at reboot it was detected and installed again. DHCP server (Router combo) gave it an address (as before), I could then ping the Router/GW (which I couldn't do before), I still can't ping another PC on the LAN, however, the other PC on the LAN can ping this one. I'm thinking more work on the TCP/IP end of things, but what would be the most effective next step. any suggestions?

I'm going to open this issue in the Networking bin. I can ping my GW/Router and an ipaddress on the internet but cannot ping the internet URL/cname. I can't ping address on the lan, but that same PC on the lan can ping suspect PC. Thanks for your help, BRDDOG & HereInOz.

Your comment that "Both the Security and Advanced tabs are missing from IE Tools/internet options/" may indicate that the browser has been commandeered by one of the many redirect routines in Kaza. Removing Kaza does not remove the attendant registry and system file entries. I've experienced this on a couple of clients' computers and found even reinstalling IE does not fix the problem.

The solution that worked for me was to download and install BOTH Spybot and BrowserHijack Blaster. Be certain to get the latest version of both and update Spybot before running it.

Thanks Bergie I'll be checking that out in the next 24hours.
