IE problems

By hop228a ·
Okay, this problem is on a friends computer.

Once the computer loads into windows, his IE loads up twice without him even clicking on them, it just loads up by itself twice. Every time he closes one, it auto opens another. Install a spyware and adware, to no luck. Installed xp sp2 still nothing.

Any one know what the solution is?

Thanks for your time.

From the Run box on the Start Menu, run msconfig

Click on the startup tab.

Look through the list of programs that run at startup.

See if any of them open IE windows, or are web updates.

Disable the programs that you are sure open IE windows.

Click on Apply, and see if that fixes the problem.

If nothing else, the list of programs on the startup tab should help you find what programs are opening up IE.

Okay, followed your instructions, only thing listed in startup tab are:

Common startup: adobe gamma loader, microsoft office, ulead photo express, winzip quick pick

Startup: ezbutton and staroffice 6.0

Nothing else that indicates IE use.

I can't tell from your post. Did you run AdAware or Spybot Search and Destroy? Did you update them before you ran them?

It sounds like spyware to me. There is either a program or a service that is initiating network connections through ie on that pc. In addition to looking at the startup group in msconfig, go through the services in the services tab to see if there are any unknown services running and disable them.

Cheers.

I've tried and updated the definitions on adaware and spybot s&d, to no luck. Also checked service tab in msconfig, couldn't find anything unknown or strange..

Turn off system repair before testing for spyware and make sure you have updated those programs before you run them, as already suggested.
